Getting a puppy? Check to see what you need to do before you bring it home.

Puppies are active, clumsy, curious, and usually a bit crazy. Even though they are very cute, it can be hard to get them used to a new place, keep them from breaking things, housebreak them, and do all the other things that come with having a pet.

One of the best things you can do is get ready, and this process starts long before you sign the papers to adopt Fido. A lot of work will go into it, but it will be well worth it. If you want to get a new dog, you should first get your house ready.

How to get ready for a new puppy

When getting ready to get a new pet, start with the bigger things. Take care to move or secure any furniture, like shelves and coffee tables, and the things that are on them.

If you want to see what a dog might be interested in, you can get down on all fours and crawl around. That will help you figure out what might interest them. Try running into things like coffee or end tables while you’re there to see what kind of mess you can make. Those could die as your puppy gets bigger or when the zoomies hit. Sticky pads or tape on the rug can help keep your dog safe when zoomies hit.

Cats and dogs like to chew on things. Cable ties can be used to hold down any wires that are hanging off of lamps, computers, TVs, and other electronics. Keep them up higher or attach them to the leg of the desk. Do anything to make them less appealing to a dog. Don’t forget to watch out for the plants. Make sure that your flowers are safe for your pet to eat in case they do decide to take a bite. If they are dangerous, move them somewhere that a dog can’t get to.

Don’t forget to look outside! There are some plants, fertilizers, and herbicides that can hurt your dog, and they will be spending time in their new yard. Also, check the outside of your yard to make sure that any gates or fences are locked and don’t have any holes that your dog could easily get through. This also includes gates for pools!

Keep your toilet lids closed, your trash locked up, your shoes and clothes hidden, and make sure you store cleaning supplies the right way when your puppy is home.
