In a delightfully nostalgic moment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night (Aug. 5), Lin-Manuel Miranda joins Jimmy Fallon for a whimsical toy instrument rendition of ‘Hamilton.’ The beloved creator and star of Hamilton celebrated the musical’s 10th anniversary by teaming up with Fallon and The Roots for a lively medley using playful classroom instruments.
Decked out in his signature colonial-style costume, Miranda brought the stage magic to Fallon’s classroom-style setup, performing Hamilton favorites like “Alexander Hamilton” and “My Shot.” The trio turned tambourines, melodicas, triangles, kazoos, and other childlike instruments into the tools of Broadway brilliance — all part of the show’s fan-favorite Classroom Instruments series, which has featured everyone from Adele to BTS.
In addition to the joyful musical segment, Miranda sat down with Fallon for a heartfelt conversation about Hamilton’s lasting legacy. He also made a major announcement: the filmed version of the original Broadway production will finally get a theatrical release on September 5.
“We filmed most of the original cast performing Hamilton in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically,” Miranda shared. “But then the pandemic hit… so we released it on streaming so everyone could watch it at home. But now, Sept. 5, you’ll be able to see Hamilton in theaters nationwide — and in Puerto Rico.”
Miranda also recalled one of his biggest regrets: missing the night Prince came to see Hamilton. “The entire cast was up all night partying with Prince,” he laughed. “I was DJing a friend’s wedding… It’s the FOMO of my life.”
With joy, humor, and a hint of bittersweet reflection, the episode proved a perfect tribute to a decade of Hamilton and its cultural impact — all with the help of a few toy instruments and a whole lot of heart.
The Hamilton filmed version originally premiered on Disney+ in July 2020 and featured a “live capture” of the stage show with the original Broadway cast. The Tonight Show episode also included a musical segment with Chance the Rapper and a guest appearance by The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper.
